Rainforests in the Congo Basin face numerous threats :

  • Decades of civil unrest
  • Deforestation for industrial-scale logging, mining, and agriculture
  • Oil exploration and extraction
  • Poaching for the illegal wildlife trade
  • Bushmeat hunting

The Congo Basin is a mosaic of dense tropical forests, swamps, and savannas twice the size of Alaska. It also holds the world’s largest peatland—which stores massive amounts of carbon.
